Many countries confronted with significant environmental challenges—depression, war or civil unrest caused by fractures within societal fiber of the country—look to the central government, the “state”, to set economic objectives and define and prioritize the needs of the community. This month’s report is a brief note on the role that governments played in the East Asian “Economic Miracle” of the 1970s and 1980s.
